Good turn-out for Sunday morning Mission: Slimpossible! session

Despite uninviting weather conditions, we had a good turnout in Ballinrobe Town Park (the Green) for our second group training for Mission: Slimpossible! this morning. Thanks to Keith McTigue and Brian Golden for taking the group through a variety of stretching routines and passing on some tips. We had young and old along, which is what we want. Some walked, some jogged – everyone did at their own pace. Ballinrobe Town AFC were there at the same time, and Ballinrobe RFC were starting just as we finished. We estimate about 60 people got exercise. The next GAA team get-together is on Tuesday night when we meet our Motivation Weight Management people (Paula O’Hara and Tina McMahon, who have been putting in a huge effort) in the Lakeside Sports & Leisure Centre at 7pm. After this meeting, there will be a group session (walking or jogging) around Ballinrobe. If you want to join in, come to the Lakeside Centre at 7.30pm. Come togged and ready for action. Weight loss / wellbeing campaign

Ballinrobe GAA club is about to get involved in a local weight loss / wellbeing campaign – we can’t reveal much more just yet, but, for now, we are looking for volunteers. Your current – or achieved – weight will not be revealed. All that will be revealed will be the amount of weight you aim to lose, and your performance versus that target. It will be a lot of fun, and involve some group training and events, plus another dimension that we cannot reveal just yet. If you’d like to take part, just email secretary.ballinrobe.mayo. Participants will be expected to raise some funds, but nothing prohibitive. Males and females, over 18, are welcome.

Peter McCartan, RIP

Ballinrobe GAA club extends sympathy to the family and friends of Peter McCartan, whose sudden death took place on Saturday and who was laid to rest in Roundfort today. Peter was an extremely well-known man in this area, as he was a former PRO of Hollymount-Carramore GAA club, and he also contributed articles and broadcasts to Mid West Radio, the Western People, the Mayo News and various other media organs. We also extend our sympathy to the Hollymount-Carramore club, who have lost a valued member. May he rest in peace.

Wiggy’s got married beyond in Athens

Breaking news from Athens, Greece, where one of our main foreign ambassadors, Tommy ‘Wiggy’ Cameron got married on Wednesday last. We hope to have pictures soon, plus, in the interests of fairness, the full name of his Greek bride, who visited Ballinrobe last summer. Wiggy played midfield for Ballinrobe for many years, and apart from the spectacular high fielding, he was famous for a winning line in Bermuda shorts. Why, he even featured in Ballinrobe Bytes – and there is no greater tribute. It was Wiggy’s lifelong lieutenant Declan O’Connor who gave us the good news as we went in the door of the Valk for the Coaching Workshop on Wednesday night.
